Many dogs go wild for a squeak. The sound may mimic prey, which is why some dogs work hard to 'kill' the squeaker. That is also the main safety concern.
Squeaky toy types
| Type | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Plush with squeaker | Soft, fun to carry and shake | Squeaker and stuffing can come out fast |
| Stuffing-free plush | Less mess when torn | Squeakers still exposed once opened |
| Rubber squeaker toy | More durable, washable | Can be torn by power chewers |
| Latex or vinyl | Soft, light, good for small dogs | Not for strong chewers |
The squeaker risk
Once a dog opens a toy, the plastic squeaker can be swallowed. Remove torn toys right away, and give squeaky toys during supervised play rather than leaving them in a crate.

Safety
No toy is truly indestructible. Supervise play with any new toy, check toys regularly for cracks, loose pieces or exposed stuffing, and throw out damaged toys. If your dog swallows part of a toy, or shows vomiting, straining or loss of appetite afterward, call your veterinarian.
