The KONG Classic, a hollow rubber toy you can fill with food, is one of the best-known dog toys. KONG makes several rubber strengths, and other brands sell similar stuffable toys.
Choosing a version
KONG's own site lists its rubber lines, such as Puppy, Classic, Extreme (for power chewers) and Senior, and gives a size chart by dog weight. Check kongcompany.com for the current lineup. If your dog is between sizes, size up.
| Your dog | Look for |
|---|---|
| Puppy | Softer puppy rubber |
| Average chewer | Classic-strength rubber |
| Power chewer | Extra-tough rubber, sized up |
| Senior dog with sensitive teeth | Softer senior rubber |
Stuffing ideas
- Part of your dog's regular kibble, moistened
- Plain canned dog food
- A smear of dog-safe treat paste at the opening
- Freeze a filled toy for a longer challenge
Avoid foods that are toxic to dogs, such as xylitol (found in some peanut butters), grapes, raisins, chocolate, onions and garlic (see the ASPCA list). Count stuffing as part of daily food.
Where to shop
More on tough toys: toys for aggressive chewers.
Safety
No toy is truly indestructible. Supervise play with any new toy, check toys for cracks, loose pieces or exposed stuffing, and throw out damaged toys. If your dog swallows part of a toy, or shows vomiting, straining or loss of appetite afterward, call your veterinarian.
